Rv rental in Norway - Adventure on four wheels!

The stunning Scandinavian country of Norway lies high up in Europe's north, just waiting for you to explore. It is ideal for a camping holiday with a Campervan. Campervan hire in Norway is becoming increasingly popular, as the country is particularly known for its fairytale nature, which will impress you with thousands of islands, beautiful beaches, fjords and mountains. Almost nowhere else will you find so many different nature experiences together! This makes Norway one of the most popular hiking areas in all of Europe and a paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts of all kinds. The Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun also attract many tourists every year and offer a unique panorama. Norway is thus a true dream country for nature lovers. Still, the country's cities, as well as the Scandinavian culture and Nordic mentality, are also worth a trip. Discover the beauty of the country on-site and see for yourself!

Campervan hire: Norway's geography and climate

The Scandinavian country has around five million inhabitants, of whom approximately 635,000 live in the capital Oslo. Sweden, Finland and Russia are Norway's neighbouring countries. The hilly country has many mountain and high plateaus, so-called fjells. In addition, the Skanden, the Scandinavian mountains, run through almost the entire mainland area. Galdhøpiggen is the highest peak in Norway and Scandinavia, at around 2740 metres.

The west coast has a relatively mild climate all year round due to the Gulf Stream. Daytime temperatures in spring are around 14 degrees in the west and south. Warm summers and quite cold and above all long winters await you in the east and northeast. Near the city of Bergen, i.e. on the south-western coast, you have to expect a bit more rainy days because here most of the clouds come down from the Atlantic. The summer months of June and July are pleasantly warm throughout Norway. Still, with autumn, the temperatures cool down again quickly.

Campervan hire in Norway - the best time to travel

The period between May and September is the best time to travel by Campervan, as the days are longer and the temperatures are higher. So nothing stands in the way of cooling off in the fresh water or water sports activities! In the town of Andenes you can even watch sperm whales, which are in the region at this time. In the south, it gets warmer as early as May, while in the north, it is a few weeks later.

But the Norwegian winter world also has a lot up its sleeve. Numerous skiers and winter sports enthusiasts flock to the country between November and April. In addition, this period has something extraordinary to offer: With a little luck, you can marvel at and observe the northern lights. So you see, every season in Norway has its own charm!

On a total distance of 1,080 kilometres across the country, you get the perfect combination of all facets of Norway.

Day 1: Oslo

At the beginning of your trip, the capital of Norway - Oslo - is on the agenda. You pick up your camper, which you rent in advance with campstar.com. The campervan site is beautifully located within the city limits at the marina, from where you can quickly reach Oslo's highlights, such as the Viking Museum or the Holmenkoll Ski Jump.

Day 2: Øvre Eidfjord (305 km)

Your next stage destination, Sæbø Camping, is located in the last village directly before the ascent to the largest high mountain plateau in all of Europe: Hardangervidda. On your road trip and at Norway's most famous waterfall, the Voringfossen, you will get phenomenal nature photos and unique impressions.

Day 3: Øvre Eidfjord/Hardangervidda

Here the motto is: pack your rucksack and head off on a mountain adventure! Many different hiking trails and vantage points give you an unforgettable panorama of Norway's mountains.

Day 4: Øvre Eidfjord - Bergen (160 km)

Breathtaking landscapes also accompany you to the next destination, the traditional city of Bergen. Especially the harbour front and the many small restaurants and cafés invite you to stroll and relax.

Day 5: Bergen - Lærdalsøyri / Sognefjord (205 km)

Norway's longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord, awaits you on your next stage. The Jotunheimen National Park and the Jostedalsbreen glacier are also in the vicinity. Your campsite is idyllically located deep inside the fjord in a spectacular landscape. It is also an ideal starting point for a cycling tour to the admirable stave church of Borgund.

Day 6: Lærdalsøyri - Flåm / Nærøyfjord 80 km (return)

On this day, you can see the Norwegian fjords from a new perspective. Take the ferry from Flåm to Gudvangen and back. It goes through the world-famous Nærøyfjord, past breathtaking waterfalls and picturesque little villages.

Day 7: Lærdalsøyri - Åndalsnes (350 km)

A Campervan trip through Norway is unthinkable without a drive over the dizzying Trollstigen. It is, therefore, on the agenda on day 7. The route takes you from Geiranger to Åndalsnes and spoils you again and again with a beautiful panoramic view. After the adventurous and winding drive, you can relax at the Trollstigen camping site and recharge your batteries for the next day.

Day 8: Åndalsnes - Vågå/Jotunheimen (185 km)

Maurvangen Besseggen Fjellpark campsite is the ideal starting point for extensive hikes through the hikers' paradise located there, also known as the "home of the giants", and takes you through Norway's most popular national park.

Day 9: Vågå - Lillehammer (160 km)

The drive on day 9 takes you from the highest mountains to idyllic Gudbrandsdal in Lillehammer. The beautifully situated campsite by the lake is only about 20 minutes from the centre of the town, which has become famous for the Winter Olympics and its colourful wooden houses. It is also home to the country's largest open-air museum, where you can delve deep into Norwegian culture and way of life. Over 200 historic buildings, shops and restaurants await your visit!

Day 10: Lillehammer - Oslo (185 km)

The last stage of the road trip has arrived. You can return your Campervan to Oslo and use the remaining time for a short city tour or an extensive walk and stroll. Immerse yourself once again in the urban lifestyle and enjoy the last few hours before you head home after your wonderful round trip.

2. Suggested route: Campervan rental, By Campervan to the North Cape

Impressive natural landscapes, charming towns, the midnight sun and the fascinating North Cape await you on this exciting and adventurous road trip by Campervan. It is advisable to plan several days at individual locations. The 10-14 day Campervan tour through Norway's north covers 535 kilometres and is an incomparable experience - see for yourself!

Stage 1: Tromsø

On this road trip, too, it makes sense to rent and reserve a suitable vehicle in advance. You can then conveniently pick it up in Tromsø. Tromso is known as the Paris of the North and the gateway to the Arctic. The city is the perfect starting point for an excursion of the wild, adventurous and diverse north with a campervan and one of the highlights of northern Norway: the northernmost university in the world. A picturesque cityscape combined with numerous sights around history and culture invites you to explore and discover. This is also where you pick up your camper, which you rent in advance with campstar.com.

Stage 2: Alta

If you leave the city of Tromso in your Campervan and head north, you will reach the area around Alta and its fjord after just one day. Here you will find all kinds of northern highlights in a compact space. In addition to the Northern Lights, a breathtaking canyon and an insight into the millennia-old culture of the local people, you have plenty of space on this stage to enjoy the mentality and way of life as well as the hospitality of the Sámi people and the picturesque landscape.

Stage 3: The North Cape - the best comes at the end

The world-famous North Cape is the destination of your road trip for most tourists, as it is considered the almost northernmost point of the continent of Europe. Even the drive there turns out to be a unique adventure, as the route takes you through unique and untouched landscapes to the North Cape tunnel: A 7 km long underwater tunnel that connects the mainland with the island of Mageröya. There are several campsites here, some of which can be visited all year round and impress with their beautiful location on the Skipsfjord. The trip is topped by a fantastic panoramic view of the Arctic Ocean from the tip of the North Cape.

Good to know - Info about a trip with a camper and Campervan rental

Norway is the country with the most air travel per capita in the whole of Europe. It, therefore, has many international airports, such as Oslo, Bergen, Haugesund and Trondheim. Alternatively, you can travel by train. Although there is no direct connection to Norway, it is possible to enter via Sweden or Denmark and already enjoy the beautiful nature and surroundings.

Campervan hire in Norway

It is advisable to choose your camper from home with campstar.com. The process is highly uncomplicated and straightforward. Once you have found the ideal campervan for you, you should ensure that the vehicle is equipped with a warning triangle and a high-visibility waistcoat when you pick it up. Vehicles registered in Norway are obliged to carry this in case of need. It is not obligatory, but nevertheless strongly recommended, to keep first-aid kits and a fire extinguisher in the camper.

There is a toll on Norwegian roads, which applies to every driver and every camper, regardless of nationality. For this, you do not have to affix a vignette, nor do you have to pull a ticket. The toll is primarily handled by an electronic toll system called AutoPASS. The caravan is automatically registered electronically when passing through the toll station, so you can even pass through without stopping. You can pay the fee within three days at a service station, usually a petrol station, usually open between 7:00 and 22:00. Cash payment is only possible at very few stations in the country unless you are travelling through the Atlanterhavstunnel: Here, it is the only payment option.

In principle, Norway has a speed limit of 80 km/h, but this does not apply to city centres or built-up areas as in most European countries. Here, only 50 km/h is allowed unless otherwise stated.
