Camping Krk: the island at the gates of Rijeka lures with Adriatic flair

The Croatian island is the largest Adriatic island of the Mediterranean with the island of Cres of the same size. It has a land mass of 405.78 square kilometres. Curicta, as the island with its Latin name is called, lies in the Kvarner Bay southeast of the Croatian city of Rijeka. Since 1980, the island can be reached from the mainland via the Krk Bridge. This is one of the reasons for the relatively high population density. A little less than 20,000 people live there all year round.
There are 68 populated villages on Krk, divided into seven municipalities. In addition, the diverse nature has created two lakes and numerous rivers as well as several caves on the island. The entire island is open for tourism. The international airport Rijeka-Riviera Kvarner Airport is located in the northeast of the island. The region is very easy to reach via this airport. In addition, the proximity to southern Germany, Austria and Northern Italy plays a major role in the popularity of the island.
The wine region Krčko vinogorje of the island has a good reputation and produces the much praised white wine Žlathina. Visits to the wine-growing areas are therefore always a good idea. Besides wine the Croats grow olives on the island. Apart from that, the Karstland characteristic of the island means that it is more like sheep farming. Especially popular are visits to the west of the island. There, in the bay Klimno, you will find the famous healing mud. The beach is shallow and even if you walk a hundred meters towards the water, the sea is still only knee-high. The popular healing mud is traditionally used for the treatment of gout.
In the northeast and on the island of Prvic, tourists will find the ornithological reserve that is home to white-headed eagles. By the way, the beaches of the island have been flying blue flags since 1998. These indicate the excellent water quality on the beaches. With up to 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, the Adriatic island is one of the sunniest places in Europe. All in all there is a mild climate, which nevertheless benefits from regular rain all year round. The number of rainy days in the summer months is six days at maximum temperatures of around 30 °C. The water temperature rises to approx. 20 °C around this time of year.

Camping in Krk

Camping is the order of the day in Croatia. The entire island has around 20 campgrounds, all of which are equipped with tents and motorhomes. The campgrounds are located on the beaches. Only in the southeast with Glavine Mala Luka no camping sites are present. The majority of the campgrounds are located around the towns of Krk-City and Punat.
Those who love active holidays will feel very comfortable on the Adriatic island. In addition to the sports facilities, which are supported by extensive cycling and hiking trails, but also by fitness trails, you can treat yourself to a diving holiday on the Adriatic. If you are interested in nautical, Marina Punat is a real nautical pearl. The marina has 800 berths on eleven landing stages. Ships up to 45 metres in length can dock here. Marina Punat is certainly a hot spot for excursions. Wakeboarding and water ski offers invite to pure water fun. Croatia offers all kinds of water sports from pedal boats to jet skis.
With excursion boats, which are offered in each larger tourism corner on the island, you can explore the island comfortably. Let us take you to other beaches and bays and get to know the island better. Without this excursion possibility, large parts of the wonderful island coast would remain hidden to you. If you want to include more culture in your holiday programme, the populated villages of the island offer historical monuments for everyone. Numerous churches, often wonderfully embedded in nature, invite you to visit and tell the history of the island in historical form.
For lovers of Croatian cuisine, not only a comfortable overnight stay in a tent or mobile home is important. No, a campground must also have access to delicious local food and products. Then camping quickly becomes a pleasure holiday. Visit the island's cheese dairies and try the island's sheep's milk cheese together with local olive specialities. If you taste a tasty wine, you won't want to leave the island and the campground. Don't forget to get your hands on the honey produced on the island. Camping in Croatia also offers a very good Mediterranean cuisine in addition to the products mentioned above.
