Camping Dordogne: Freedom and relaxation

Camping and France, especially camping and Dordogne, are like twins: they belong together. Whether it's a motorhome, tent, caravan, or even an overnight stay in a bungalow on the site, this type of holiday is ideal for people who want to be as close as possible to nature and places of interest, who love freedom and relaxation, and for those who prefer a little more luxury, they book an overnight stay in the form of glamping, the modern form of luxury camping. The Dordogne is a département where nature prevails with crystal-clear rivers, where savoir-vivre is at home and where you can enjoy sporting activities as well as the many regional culinary delicacies. Almost every place has a larger or smaller campsite, so you don't have to worry about not finding accommodation. All of them are equipped with supply and disposal facilities as well as mostly sufficient electricity connections, clean sanitary facilities and often even WLAN, so that there is nothing lacking. The ways to the sightseeings, to the canoe & kayak rental or also to the next baker are short. And the specialities of the region - foie gras, black truffles, mushrooms, duck, nuts as well as delicious wines like Bergerac or Monbazillac - can usually be bought locally. So what could be nicer than sitting at your camping table in the evening and enjoying the regional delicacies as well as the nature around you?

The agony of choice...

In the Dordogne area there are countless different campsites: large and small, simple and luxurious, those in the middle of fields, woods and meadows or others within walking distance of sights and places of interest. Many of them also offer spacious pitches, supply and disposal stations for the motorhome, variously equipped sanitary facilities with washing machines and/or dryers and other services. This can include a roll service, a small shop on the site, a restaurant or a snack as well as children's play, volley, boules or barbecue areas and a pool for leisure. Fishing permits, free or paid WiFi and animation are further services offered by some pitches, and you can of course contact and book one or the other from home. Many also offer special off-season rates or discounts for longer stays, or accept discounts on special campers' cards. Which campsite is the best cannot be answered in this way, not even where it is best to spend the night. This depends on your individual preferences. If you like hiking or cycling, you will find a place close to the numerous hiking and cycling paths. If you prefer sightseeing tours, you should look for a central place close to the respective cities.

Something for everyone...

The department of Dordogne is located in the southwest of France and owes its name to the river of the same name that flows through it. It - as well as other crystal-clear rivers - are ideal for fishing and water sports, which can be done particularly well from the various campsites. Hardly any other département in France has so many different sights and attractions to offer as the Dordogne. In addition to numerous castles and palaces, cathedrals, monasteries and smaller churches, the region scores with its breathtaking green landscape and numerous archaeological sites, such as the famous Lascaux Cave or the Dolmen Peyre Levade. All these things can always be easily reached from the place of your overnight stay on foot, by bike, by car or even by canoe, whereby "canoe" is the keyword: especially in the summer months, one finds countless boat rentals that include a return transport. Some campsites even offer their own canoe rental.

Cultural sites, culinary specialities and a lot of greenery...

The Dordogne has so many recommendable destinations that you can't even name them all. Each campsite has enough information to make the decision a little easier, but a must is a visit to the beautiful city of Brantôme, also known as "Venice of the Périgords", whose old town is located on an island. Brantôme is also the destination of many canoeists who have started from individual campsites on the Dronne or the Dordogne, and the Marqueyssac Gardens are regional attractions. It is easy to stroll between lovingly laid out greenery. The breathtaking view of the Dordogne Valley is the crowning glory. Another unforgettable sight is the historic village of La Roque-Gageac, which nestles against the cliffs high above the Dordogne. With its Mediterranean climate, the resulting tropical vegetation and idyllic narrow streets, it is an insider tip among campers. In Sarlat-la-Canéda, Périgueux, the caves of La Roque-Saint-Christophe and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, you can also discover the history and beauty of this part of France.

Conclusion

All in all, it can be said that the Dordogne area is predestined to be a passionate camper - but also a newcomer - spending the most valuable time of the year here camping. The region has so much to offer that you have to come back again and again to get to know at least a large part of what nature, architecture, history and of course culinary delicacies have to offer, and the individual municipalities of the département have plenty of places to stay overnight. There is something for everyone: glamping at its best, campsites for caravans or tents, but also accommodation in a bungalow. Adults and children will love to sit together at the camping table in the midst of the most beautiful nature and to let the eventful day pass in review.
