Camping in Sweden: enjoy untouched nature

Sweden, at the heart of Scandinavia is a nation full of hearty charm. In the far north of the world we discover what we lack: endless landscapes, unspoilt national parks and a lovingly cared environment, which provokes many to go camping there.

Whoever comes here is looking for one thing above all else: peace and serenity. And perhaps from time to time a visit to a sleepy village in the middle of nowhere to treat yourself to the traditional Fika in one of the lovingly designed cafés.

The friendly Swedes may be a bit shy, but it only takes a little time to talk to them until they generously share their knowledge about the most beautiful hiking routes and the most spectacular viewing spots that aren't on Google.

Best of all, the dense network of hiking trails and campgrounds stretches right across the country. Whether you're drawn to the remoteness of Norrland or the tranquil countryside of Småland, campers are always welcome!

The best places to camp in Sweden

Sweden is painted from north to south by a maze of hiking trails, campgrounds and national parks. From the southern regions of Skåne to the northern regions of the Arctic Circle, an overnight stay is more than worthwhile..

Inexperienced campers who want to take advantage of the milder climate in the south are spoilt for choice when it comes to transport. Numerous ferry connections as well as the Öresund Bridge to Denmark make the journey straight from Northern Germany as easy as pie. There's also a large number of small airports dotted around the country that makes flying even easier if you're coming from far away.

Unlike in the UK and many other countries in Europe, camping is allowed everywhere in Sweden, even outside the official campgrounds. This is ensured by the Allemansrätten, which is laid down in the Swedish laws. The translation with "Everyman's Right" does what it says on the tin: campers may pitch their tents anywhere and at any time, as long as they do not damage the flora and fauna.

The Swedes are lovers of the outdoors. The industry has also adjusted to this. In every larger town there are excellently sorted specialised shops with camping and outdoor supplies. If something happens to your own supply, you can easily get a replacement anytime and anywhere.

Those who want to experience the breathtaking nature whilst hiking will enjoy the perfectly signposted and excellently maintained hiking trails. On one of the campgrounds along the routes, you can comfortably have a good night's sleep. The campgrounds often have fireplaces and some even have outhouses.

Camping - one with nature?

With more than 100,000 lakes in the country, water covers almost 10% of Sweden's surface area! Nature-loving hikers can easily find a campground where they can recharge their batteries to get ready for what the next day brings. Water sports enthusiasts will also undoubtedly get their money's worth.

If you're an experienced mountaineer, the rugged North is perfect for you. In winter, the northern region turns in a tue winter spos paradise. But if you're afraid of the cold and snow, you an easily find something else to do along the 2000 mile coastline.

No matter where you go, the dense, natural forests that cover most of the country are everywhere. In summer the trees offer shade and bud delicious berries for hikers to eat and in winter a mysterious, eerie, beautiful panorama is formed.

If you don't want to spend the night wild camping in a tent, you can also explore Sweden in a motorhome. Even with this luxurious form of glamping, closeness to nature is omnipresent. Make sure to plan ahead before you stop anywhere with your campervan, as the Allemansrätten law does not apply to motor vehicles.

The best campgrounds in Sweden

The Swedish National Camping Association (SCR) keeps a register of campgrounds throughout the country. If you don't fancy sleeping in the wilderness, but on a designated site with sanitary facilities and shopping facilities, you'll find what you're looking for here. A bungalow or a small holiday home (Swedish "Stuga") can also be found quickly via the directory. Parking your motorhome somewhere is allwed, however in there are rules and regulations you must follow. As always, a consideration for flora and fauna is top-priority.

If you want to relive your childhood memories, you should head for Småland in the centre of southern Sweden and look forward to seeing Pippi Longstocking, Emil and Co. again in Katthult, Vimmerby and Mariannelund. The region is well developed for tourism and is not only a paradise for nature lovers.

Unbroken wilderness and total seclusion can only be found in Lappland. The sparsely populated region of northern Sweden is famous for its tranquility, the Northern Lights in winter, the midnight sun in summer and of course, Santa Claus.

The right campground for everyone

Whether you're camping in a tent, motorhome or glambing in the wild, the Scandinavian pearl full of character at the Arctic Circle is worthwhile for visitors of all ages. The Swedes warm hospitality and willingness to share the great wonders of their country, make a holiday in Sweden one to remember. Peace and quiet, pure and untouched nature will make you want to visit Sweden again and again, and again.
