France has always been a popular destination for camping fans and not without good reason: the country is not only uniquely nature-rich, but also has many cultural attractions to offer – and last but not least a large selection of campsites.

About the region

Ardeche is located in the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in the southeast of France. The rather rugged mountain landscape offers unique flora and fauna protected by nature reserves. Even if Ardeche is not located by the sea, you do not have to live without swimming and bathing: The river, from which the region derives its name, has clear water and many bathing spots. There is also a lot of cultural activities to discover in Ardeche.

The 10 most beautiful places in Ardeche

Gorges de l’Ardeche:Gorges de l'Ardeche

In the south of Ardeche, the Ardeche Gorge is found amidst spectacular rock and forest landscapes in a nature reserve. If your camping trip takes you to this area, don’t miss the chance to canoe through such a breathtaking natural spectacle. If a canoe trip is too adventurous for you, why not take a hike to discover the 30 kilometres of the route? We recommend that you divide the route into two days and spend the night at one of the designated bivouac sites.

Vallon-Pont-d’Arc

The lively small town is not only a good starting point to visit places like the Chauvet Grotto or the Pont-d’Arc – here you can stroll, get a coffee in one of the many cafes and bars as well as admire the old town hall. If you’re staying at a nearby campsite, it’s worth visiting the big market in the village square on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Pont d'Arc

The Pont-d’Arc:

The hike or canoe trip through the Ardeche Gorge will automatically take you past the landmark of the region: the Pont-d’Arc. The naturally formed rock bridge leads about 5 km from the town of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, almost 60 metres across the river.

Aubenas

The small medieval town has many special sights – for example the castle built in the 14th century, with a tower that still offers a magnificent view over the whole valley.

Parc Nationale de Cevennes

Parc National des Cévennes

The Cévennes National Park is a must for all outdoor enthusiasts. In 1970 in order to protect the unique flora and fauna, the park extends over 300 ha area. There you can do whatever you want on your camping trip. A few snacks packed and off you go! Let the magic enchant you.

Annonay

At the beginning of June 1783, two adventurous brothers started their journey flying the world’s first hot-air balloon from here. On the first weekend of June each year, a huge festival celebrates this event: thousands of visitors, games and, of course, dozens of hot-air balloons to be seen when camping in Ardeche

le Jardin d'Eden-Ardeche

Le Jardin d’Eden

Not far from the town of Tournon-sur-Rhone you will find a real paradise. The gardens of a former nunnery, already well known in the 16th century, stood fallow for several years before being turned into a second Garden of Eden by a couple with green thumbs.

Grotto Chauvet

An absolute highlight of a trip to Ardeche, and not only interesting for Werner Herzog fans: A visit to the Sistine Chapel of the Stone Age. Unfortunately, that cave was only discovered in 1994 and its stunning paintings are not open to the public, however, not far from the cave, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, you can see a replica of the approximately 36,000 year old cave paintings in a museum.

Mont-Gerbier-de-Jonc

Aven d’Orgnac

More than 100 million years ago the impressive limestone formations formed – today you can explore the cave in a guided tour of several hours.
