Enough with Mykonos, Barcelona or Tel Aviv? Today is the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, therefore we’d like to introduce you to the top 10 destinations for the LGBT community, according to the Gay Travel Index 2019*.

10. Malta

Number 10 on our list is Malta! The country consisting out of 3 islands. This should be reason enough for you to visit it. But we’ll give you some more reasons, anyway: the rock gate Azure Window, the bay Blue Lagoon, the underground cave Ninu and the park Il-Ballut tal-Wardija, with its thousand-year-old oaks.

9. Luxembourg

A small, but beautiful holiday destination is Luxemburg. The best thing about Luxembourg is that you can see the whole country with just 4 Euros. Ok, it’s not the biggest country, let’s agree on that. But that doesn’t mean that the Mullerthal, known as the small Luxembourgish Switzerland, or the castle Ansembourg won’t impress you. Besides, Luxembourg’s nightlife is not so bad.

8. Iceland

Sure, Iceland’s a top destination right now. Who wouldn’t like to visit the biggest waterfall of the country in the northeast, called Dettifoss, or the colorful mountains Landmannalaugar in the south? And if find yourself in the south, the Bláa Lónið (Blue Lagoon) is only a stone’s throw away! And before you ask, yes, there are plenty of campsites to choose from!

7. Finland

Vodka, huskies and saunas. Sure, Finland isn’t ideal for camping, someone might think. But But that is exactly what makes Finland suitable for camping! The cities, villages, forests etc. are not going to be overcrowded by tourists. Be one of the first to discover the country in summer and taste the delicious fish by the campfire while you enjoy the silence of the night and look at the stars in the sky.

6. Denmark

Denmark is like any other Scandinavian country, but smaller, right? Wrong. Hans-Christian Andersen’s country has a lot of beauty that will amaze you. Be one of the few who won’t be impressed by Copenhagen’s reputation. Instead, discover the tip of Denmark, also known as North Jutland or the fairytale island of Funen. Maybe you have a van? Then you can discover the country on your 4 wheels.

5. Belgium

Pralines and beer aren’t what you’re looking for? Fortunately, you can also spend time your time in nature. How about visiting the Hallerbos Blue Forest or hiking along the Ninglinspo mountain river? There also have a couple of campsites nearby. For example: Camping La Dime and Camping Parc des Sources.

4. Austria

Austria is a small, but impressive country. Beautiful mountains, pretty castles and warm weather create the bigger picture. No matter if you want to feel like Heidi and take a trip to the Alps or if you want to get in the shoes of Princess Sissi and explore the glamorous side of Vienna: Austria is the right place for you.

3. Sweden

The Scandinavian country is number 3 on our list. The countless lakes, the breath of fresh air and the popular oat thalers contribute to an unforgettable holiday. Yes, especially the oat thalers! As experts we would like to suggest following campsites: Ekerums Camping, in the south, Sollefteå Camping Risön, near the river Ångermanälven and Byske Havsbad, in the beautiful north. Alternatively, you can take your van or rucksack and make your way to Wildcamping!

2. Portugal

Ahh Portugal! The wine, the Atlantic, the small streets with the colorful houses, the food, the azulejos, fado music and so on and so on. Of course Lisbon and Porto have a lot to offer. Yet the true beauty of Portugal lies on its beaches, mountains and natural parks. How about a visit to the beach de Benagil or a hike to the 1993 m high mountain Torre? Pack your things and let the journey begin!

1. Canada

First place in the Gay Travel Index 2019 goes to this huge country with few inhabitants: Canada. Of course you could visit Niagara Falls and the big cities like Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver, but that sounds a bit too mainstream, doesn’t it? Canada is well known for its beautiful scenery and impressive natural parks. So we suggest you to put Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island and Canada’s oldest national park, Banff National Park, high at your list. Enjoy the silence and let yourself be fascinated by the beautiful nature.

Finnland, Malta or Iceland?

No matter where your RV, bike or just your two legs will take you to: Discover! You will find everywhere something interesting to see, get the chance to expand your knowledge or just have a nice and relaxing time. So pack your things and off you go!

*The Gay Travel Index is published annually by Spartacus Travel. The countries get positive and negative points depending on how they deal with discrimination and what rights the LGBT community enjoys. There are also minus points for countries where homosexuality is a considered illegal.
