Wild camping is generally prohibited in Frankfurt Main. There are a lot of possibilities to park your camper overnight in Frankfurt Main - either on a campsite or on a parking lot for campervans.

This is allowed in principle, as long as the instructions for the safe fastening of the child are followed.
In Germany, you are allowed to spend one night in your RV in places where it is not explicitly forbidden. This “interruption of the journey” officially serves as a means to “restore the ability to drive”. This means if you are too tired to continue driving, you may – at any time – stop in a suitable parking lot and rest until you can continue driving. For this reason, you shouldn’t give the impression that you want to camp there. Taking out chairs, extending the awning, and preparing for a barbecue will give the impression of a long term stay. It’s a good idea to arrive as late as possible and continue early the next day. Overnight parking of maximum 10 hours is tolerated.
Germany has a network of official RV areas called Stellplatz, and there’s around 3600 of them throughout the country. These areas are usually provided by villages or towns and many also offer water, waste disposal and electricity hook-up. It is also possible, for example, in parking lots on the motorway or at parking bays and rest areas on federal highways where there are no prohibition signs for campers. In such parking lots, overnight stays are usually free of charge, unless you park your RV in a paid parking lot.
In Germany, motorhomes weighing up to 3.5 tonnes are allowed to drive fairly fast. The speed limit outside of towns and villages is 100 km/h, while you can go up to 120 km/h on express roads. Most German motorways don’t have a speed limit. However, ADAC, the German automobile association, recommends a speed limit of 130 km/h.
Germany is a very friendly country to campervan enthousiast, it has beautiful scenery, smooth roads, and numerous campsites. The autobahn also makes travelling easy and quick.

Important information and facts about Frankfurt Main

RV Rental Frankfurt am Main: Discover Frankfurt am Main with campstar

Frankfurt - the city with the only skyline in Germany, with the finance scene and numerous other attractions meandering along the River Main, is just right for a campervan holiday. The Federal Central Bank, but also the Römer and the famous shopping street Zeil give the city a very special charm. The metropolis on the Main offers a beautiful palm garden and numerous museums, such as the Senkenberg Museum, the Museum of Modern Art or the Jewish Museum. There is even a Museum Embankment on the Main, with several buildings and numerous themes. If you spend your campervan holiday here, you can see the divide between modern and ancient. Frankfurt's Main embankment is very natural, but the city's skyscrapers rise in the background. The Vogelsberg is not far from the city either, nor is the Taunus. When renting a campervan, you'll want such rural regions, because there are only designated campervan sites in the city centre, which you should also visit for an overnight stay here. The most beautiful and idyllic campsites, however, are outside the city. If you want to stay somewhere cheap, you should look for a place to stay along the Main or Rhine rivers.

Rent RV in Frankfurt and visit destinations around the city

Renting a campervan in Frankfurt is easy, because there's a great campstar station here. It's cozy here once the campervan has been picked up and you have the key. Then you can plan your route and visit wonderful places in the area. Drive along the Main to its mouth at the Mainspitze, which is opposite Mainz and near Gustavsburg and Kostheim. You can discover precisely these two districts, which once belonged to Mainz but are now located in Wiesbaden. Kostheim on the island of Maaraue is a very busy place. The swimming pool on the island is always busy. But there is also a campsite here for day visitors, for rent. From here, it is not far to the beautiful city of Mainz on the other side of the Rhine. Mainz is very popular with its cathedral, the Chagal window in St Stephen's Church and the Kupferberg terraces with their gigantic view. From here it is also not far to discover the idyllic Altrhein and Schiffmühle in Ginsheim. There used to be 19 such mills here, but today only one remains and has been converted into a museum. Once a month on Sundays, you can take a guided tour here. On the Altrhein itself, you can rent pedal boats or canoes and enjoy the beautiful weather. Rainy days are rare around Mainz. Compared to Frankfurt, Mainz is a very tranquil city.

Your RV holiday starts in Frankfurt

Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate are large and only a stone's throw away from a holiday in Frankfurt. You can also discover much more along the Rhine. Either you drive towards Worms, the city of the Nibelungs, and take a look at the cathedral, the Rhine bridge and the Nibelungen Museum. A little further north is the Kühkopf, an area that is home to numerous water birds and is a nature reserve. There are many hiking opportunities here. Also just a day trip away is the romantic Rhine Valley with all its castles. This begins directly behind Mainz, continues via Rüdesheim on the right bank of the Rhine, Bingen with its Mäuseturm and castle, and on to St. Goar and St. Goarshausen. This is where the famous Rhine in Flames takes place every September. A festival where many dozens of boats float on the Rhine and watch fireworks over the water. The many castles in the Rhine valley can be visited. Some are youth hostels and hotels, others restaurants. The town of Rüdesheim is famous for its delicious coffee made with schnapps. But the torture museum should also be visited. Take the chairlift up to the Niederwald Monument.

Camping holidays in Frankfurt with numerous excursions to the mountains

A little further north of Frankfurt is the beautiful town of Bad Homburg with its large spa gardens, the Russian church and the Römerkastel. Directly behind it begins the Taunus mountains, which stretch up to the Feldberg and on to Bad Schwalbach. A well-known town here is Königstein with its ancient fortress, quaint old town and numerous restaurants that invite you to stop for a bite to eat. When renting a campervan, you should definitely take this excursion. The journey then continues across the pretty valleys of the Taunus, past Idstein, a small town that is also well worth seeing and where you should make a stop with the campervan. Idstein has many small shops, a beautiful town wall and old churches. Numerous half-timbered houses also adorn the town centre, which you can visit with your campervan.

Magnificent capital

The capital of Hesse is not Frankfurt, even though this is probably the largest city in the state, it is Wiesbaden, a city that hugs the Neroberg and has quite a bit of culture. Besides the beautiful warm springs and the spa gardens, the city is a "bath", as its name suggests. But the world's largest cuckoo clock is also on a house wall here. You can take the mountain railway up to the Neroberg and visit the Russian church and the Opel swimming pool. From the pool you have a view over the whole city and the Rhine valley. Just outside the city centre is Biebrich Castle. Here you can take a walk in the park or visit the restaurant in the castle. Wiesbaden also has a lot to offer besides Frankfurt and is located at the foot of the Taunus Mountains. In winter, many people go to the plateau for sledging and tobogganing, because there is usually snow here much sooner than in the city.

General information about RV hire in Frankfurt

If you want to book RV, don't be put off by the price, because the journey here by train and a hotel room sometimes cost more than a campervan per day. What's more, you're not flexible, because if you take the train to Frankfurt and book a hotel in the city, you'll always have to return to the location in the evening, you can't plan to go to another campsite and you don't even have a car on site. All the destinations we described above would be difficult or impossible to reach. So the focus here is on flexibility and the freedom to decide about your holiday and to stay at all the places you want. The bed is always with you. You can still travel to Frankfurt by train, but then rent a campervan on the spot. It is also possible to arrive by plane just a few kilometres southwest of the city, at Germany's largest airport, where planes take off all over the world. From here, the S 8 and S 9 trains travel directly to the city centre and to the place where you can rent the campervan.

Conclusion:

Frankfurt is a great place to rent RV and explore the surrounding area here. There are many ways to feel at home here and experience your adventures in a small space. A campervan is a nice way to travel, as you have a hotel room and means of transport in one.

Get inspired to experience a great adventure in Frankfurt Main
