Which camping tent suits you best?

There are many different tents on the market. It’s not easy for many buyers to find the perfect model for their needs. The following guide will help you make your decision. At the same time it explains, among other things, what different types of tents there are and what to look out for when buying one.

What should I bear in mind when buying a tent for camping?

When buying a tent, there are different points to keep in mind. After all, it should last as long as possible and fit your needs perfectly.

Construction

There are numerous different types of tents, which differ among other things also in their construction. If you want to be protected on long hikes, you should choose a model that has a waterproof outer skin made of polyester or nylon. The inner tent, on the other hand, should be breathable and provide ideal air exchange. The mosquito nets must be closed tightly.

Entrances

A tent with two entrances is very practical. On hot summer days, it can create a draught and give you a breath of fresh air. While on stormy weather you can make your life a little bit easier, since you will always have one opening protected from the wind.

Choose your next tent for your camping holidays

Ventilation

Every tent should have some ventilation openings. It prevents condensation from accumulating inside the tent. Ideally, the two  are opposite of each other and can be closed completely if necessary, preferably from the inside as well.

Electric lines and poles

A tent should have some electricity lines so that it is always safe and secure even in stormy weather. It is best if they can be connected to the poles. The latter should be made of a robust yet lightweight material such as aluminium or carbon. In most variations, the individual parts are connected with an elastic band.

Water column

When buying a tent, you should also pay attention what water column the different models have. This indicates the water pressure that the respective outer material can withstand. If the value is reached, humidity drips into the tent. For camping in temperate areas, a water column of around 5,000 millimetres is usually sufficient. In regularly rainy areas, however, the value should be slightly higher (8,000 or higher).

Floor

The floor of a tent must be able to withstand all loads without any problems and must therefore be made of a slightly thicker nylon. It should also be possible to raise the sides around eight to ten centimetres. This ensures that water does not run into the tent when it rains.

Tents for different areas

Camping in warm areas

If more often you want to camp in warm areas, you need a tent that doesn’t heat up very quickly. Therefore you have to make sure that your tent has a good ventilation system. The best way to achieve this is if your tent has two openings opposing each other. It is also helpful to buy one in a light colour, as they tend to heat up less quickly. In addition, the tent should have dense and safe mosquito nets.

Camping in windy areas

The ideal tent for windy areas must be very solid. You should choose a model that cannot be pulled out of its anchors by strong wind or by a storm. Such as for instance the so-called dome tent. An aerodynamic shape as well as a very robust material for your tent that reaches down to the ground can best protect you from a storm. If your tent has two entrances, one of them is usually going to be in the slipstream. Be aware that poles need to be more stable than the once used in mild areas.

Camping in extreme conditions

Quality should not be compromised when going for camping in extreme weather conditions. This can be a matter of life and death. It is important, for example, that you can easily use your tent even with gloves on. Furthermore it must be windproof and waterproof. If it is to be used in very cold conditions, it should be made of materials that are always flexible even in the cold and can withstand heavy snow loads.

What types of tents are there?

There are quite a few tents to choose from! Here is a small list:

Dome tents

The so-called dome tents are suitable for trekking and mountain tours. They have the advantage that they are wind stable with just a few pegs.

The tunnel tent is ideal for your next camping holiday

Tunnel tents are suitable for camping in windy areas. They are also relatively light weight and are therefore very popular for trekking tours.

The ridge tent might be your next choice for camping holidays

Ridge tent (gable frame tent)

The ridge tent has a rectangular basic shape and is also the most known. It is quick and easy to erect and also has a rather small packing size. Nowadays it is used very rarely, because it has a couple of disadvantages compared to new models.

Pyramid tent, the practical decision for camping

Pyramid tent (tipi)

The pyramid tent, also called tipi, got its name due to its resemblance to a pyramid. Its shape can vary between a square, a hexagon or a circle. A pole is placed in the middle to which the tent is attached. The pole can alternatively be hung to a tree.

Throw tent, ideal for camping holidaysThrow tent

A throw tent can be set up within a few seconds, due to the fiberglass stands that are sewn firmly into the fabric. This means less work for the user. It is very flat when folded, which makes it ideal for camping on hikes. The throw tent takes little space in the rucksack, while at the same time being very light.

Conclusion: finding a suitable tent

There are many different types of tents suitable for different purposes. When choosing a tent, one must keep in mind the conditions in which one is going to camp. Factors like form, material, wind stability and water proof play an important role. If you are still unsure which model to choose, you can ask a specialist salesman for advice.
