Campervan hire in Switzerland: The most beautiful sights

Switzerland offers countless sights. Travelling through this country in a campervan gives you the opportunity to see at least some of the country's most important sights, as you are flexible and can explore a different region every day.

It would be impossible to list all the highlights of Switzerland here. Therefore, here is a selection of the country's most beautiful sights.

  • The Matterhorn: At 4,478 metres, the Matterhorn is one of the highest mountains in the Alps. And one of the most important landmarks in Switzerland.
  • Bern's Old Town: The Old Town with its medieval structures has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
  • The Rhine Falls of Schaffhausen: The Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen is the largest waterfall in Europe and an incredible natural spectacle.
  • Lucerne is often called the most beautiful city in Switzerland. With narrow streets and historic wooden bridges, the city is definitely worth a visit.
  • Lake Lucerne is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. You can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake from Lucerne.
  • If you are afraid of heights, it is better not to visit the Triftbrücke. The suspension rope bridge is 100 metres above the Triftsee and offers a breathtaking view of the turquoise-blue glacial lake. The hike to the bridge takes about 1.5 hours.

Rent a campervan and visit the Swiss lakes

You want to hire a camper and start a road trip to the Swiss lakes? No problem - we've picked out the country's most beautiful lakes for you:

  • Lake Constance is definitely one of the most popular travel destinations. Part of Lake Constance also belongs to Germany - and part even to Austria.
  • Lake Geneva is one of the largest lakes in Europe. Hire a campervan and head to Lake Geneva and enjoy the summer by the lake!
  • Lac de Champex: This lake is often referred to as the "Canada of Switzerland". Also a great destination for the road trip.
  • Lake Lucerne is perfect for swimming in summer. Or rent a boat and spend a day on the water?
  • Lake Maggiore offers a Mediterranean feeling - no wonder, one part of the lake is in Italy, the other in Switzerland.
  • Lake Brienz is set against a spectacular mountain backdrop. The perfect mix of an active holiday in the mountains and a relaxed swimming holiday by the lake.

So if you want to hire a campervan, Switzerland is the perfect destination for a road trip. Every region of the country is worth a visit - you'll find idyllic landscapes, fairytale towns and turquoise lakes everywhere. Perfect for renting a camper and getting to know the country in all its beauty.

The climate - Best time for a camper trip

When should I take my camper to Switzerland? The good news is: this country is worth visiting at any time of year. Whether in spring, summer and autumn for hiking, or in winter for skiing and snowboarding. It's beautiful here at any time of year and always worth a trip. In the summer months, you can also go swimming in the many lakes in Switzerland.

However, you should be aware of one thing: Some of the mountains in this country are over 4,000 metres high. This means that even in summer it can get quite cold at high altitudes. So if you plan to take your camper to higher regions, you should definitely bring appropriate clothing to avoid freezing.

The regions north of the Alps are generally cooler and wetter than those south of the Alps. In the south of Switzerland, Mediterranean influences dominate the climate.

Facts & figures - the most important for your camping trip through Switzerland

The most important facts about holidays in Switzerland:

  • Size: Approx. 41,285 km²
  • Languages: German, French, Italian
  • Currency: Swiss franc

Important: These rules apply when you hire a campervan in Switzerland

If you want to hire a camper van and are travelling by campervan in Switzerland, then you should of course inform yourself about the rules that apply there. We have summarised the most important regulations for you here.

Entry into Switzerland:

German citizens can enter this country with a passport, identity card or children's passport.

If you bring a dog with you, it needs an EU pet passport, a microchip identification and a rabies vaccination that is at least 21 days old. Dogs younger than 15 weeks old are not allowed to enter the country.

This is how fast you are allowed to drive when you travel through Switzerland in a campervan:

Here, it essentially depends on whether the campervan weighs less than 3.5 t or more.

For vehicles up to 3.5 t total weight applies:
  • 50 km/h inner city
  • 80 km/h out of town
  • 100 km/h on motorways
  • 120 km/h on motorways
For vehicles over 3.5 t total weight applies:
  • 80 km/h out of town
  • 100 km/h on motorways/highways
  • 100 km/h on motorways/highways

If you are travelling with a caravan, you are only allowed to drive 80 km/h on motorways.

Toll in Switzerland: How much toll do I have to pay with a camping vehicle?

When you enter Switzerland, you have to pay tolls. Here, the procedure is as follows: You buy an annual vignette that you stick in your windscreen. With this you can use motorways and national roads for 14 months. The annual vignettes are always valid from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year. That is 14 months instead of 12. A vignette costs 40 CHF, which is roughly equivalent to 38.50 euros.

But beware, this only applies if you do not exceed the permissible total weight of 3.5 tonnes with your campervan. This should not be a problem for most campervans that you are allowed to drive with your normal car licence. But if you drive a particularly heavy campervan with more than 3.5 tonnes, you will also have to pay a flat-rate heavy vehicle fee.

You can buy the annual vignette either directly at the border, at petrol stations near the border or online.

If you are travelling with a (caravan) trailer, you must buy an extra vignette for it, even if you already have one for the towing vehicle. This sticker must be attached to an "accessible and not easily replaceable" part of the trailer.

Traffic rules in Switzerland

What other rules apply when I drive my campervan through Switzerland?

  • Light obligation: Here you must have the low beam or daytime running lights on all day, no matter how bright it is.
  • Alcohol and driving: In Switzerland, the blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰. If you violate this limit, you can expect fines, suspension of your driving licence or even imprisonment.
  • Travelling with children: Children under 12 years of age who are smaller than 1.50 m must sit in a child seat.

By the way, high-visibility waistcoats are not compulsory in this country, but they are recommended.
