Destinations – Road trip Italy

Rome and Vatican

Rome, the famous capital of Italy, is a must-see city when visiting this extraordinary country. Rome is easily accessible by train, car or plane, which makes it the perfect city to start off your road trip through Italy. Before picking up your campervan, take two days to visit the city! While discovering Rome, do not forget to visit the Vatican, the heart of the Catholic religion and home to the pope.

  • Campground recommendation in the area: The Camping village Roma in town is the ideal spot to explore Rome and Vatican City. Being situated only 6.5km away from the famous Colosseum as well as merely a 15 min drive from the Vatican it has the perfect location. On top of that, the campsite is equipped with amazing amenities, including restaurants, sports facilities, swimming pool and even a Jacuzzi!

Villa d’Este

La Villa d’Este in Tivoli is declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is a perfect example of traditional Italian gardens, showing typical Mannerism and Baroque influences.

Pescara

Our next stop with our campervan after Rome and la Villa d’Este is Pescara. Located on the East Coast, the city is the perfect stop to enjoy an idyllic walk by the sea.

San Marino

San Marino is a micro state within Italy. Located on top of a hill, it offers a breath-taking view that you shouldn’t miss out on.

      • Campground recommendation in the area: The campsite in the Republic of San Marino is only a 25-minute drive from the Adriatic Riviera and the town of Rimini. It has a variety of attractions, including a swimming pool, entertainment, a kid’s club and a small farm, which makes it perfect for a camping holiday with the entire family.

Bologna

Our next stop is Bologna, one of the biggest cities in Italy. Among the most famous monuments are the two towers in the city centre square “Piazza di Porta Ravegnana”.

  • Campground recommendation in the area: The campsite “Città di Bologna” is only 5 km outside of the city and even provides a bus into town for its guests. When you need a break from exploring the city of Bologna you can relax by the pool or enjoy some classic Italian dishes at their restaurant.

Carpi

Carpi is a small, charming city on the way to Piacenza. It is worth to stop there for a few hours to visit the city and appreciate the architecture and beauty of its historical buildings.

Piacenza

Piacenza is one of the oldest Italian cities. To learn more about the history of the city, there is a museum that was built in the 16th century.

  • Campground recommendation in the area: While there is no campsite directly in Piacenza (besides a small parking lot for campervans) there are lots of campgrounds in the area. We particularly like the “River Camping” 20-30 mins outside of Piacenza. It’s a very family friendly environment that also offers various events and live music during the summer season.

Milan

Milan is a huge city, which means there is lots to do! The campstar Team recommends staying in Milan for at least two days to have enough time to discover the fashion capital.

  • Campground recommendation in the area: If you’re looking for a campsite right outside the city, Camping Village Città Di Milano is the spot for you! It offers everything you need, from spacious pitches, playground, clean sanitary facilities and a restaurant.

Cinque Terre National Park

Pictures speak louder than words no? So what are you waiting for – A blue lagoon with crystal clear water, cliffs, beach and colorful houses = paradise !

  • Campground recommendation in the area: Camping Acqua Dolce is the closest you will get with your campervan to Cinque Terre, as camping directly in the national park is not permitted. The campsite is only 200 m from the seaside and is completely eco-friendly as it uses eco saving sanitaries, alternative energy and is surrounded by more than 175 different species of trees and flowers.

Tuscany

Our last stop before driving back to Rome is Tuscany. Do not hesitate to stop anywhere along the way and take a walk in the beautiful Tuscan nature.

Pisa

Piazza dei Miracoli and the Leaning Tower are of course must-see. Who has never dreamed about visiting the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa?

Florence and San Miniato

Besides Pisa, the two main cities worth visiting in Tuscany are Florence and San Miniato. Florence was a hub for medieval trade and finance. Nowadays it is characterized by its architecture and art from the renaissance. San Miniato, on the other hand, is located on top of a hill and is known for its white truffle.

  • Campground recommendation in the area: The “Camping Village Il Poggetto” is right in the center of Tuscany. Located just outside of Florence and halfway between San Marino and Pisa it is the ideal starting point for day trips to explore the Tuscan region.

Return to Rome – end of Italy road trip

On your last day you will be making your way back to the capital to return your vehicle. Depending on your drop- off time you might be able to squeeze in a few more stops on the way back to Rome, find our suggestions in the free guide!
