Important information and facts about London

Campervan hire London: Discover London with campstar

Have you ever thought of renting a campervan for your holiday in England? Big cities are also suitable for a holiday with a rented campervan. Lively city flair and breathtaking nature: London and its surroundings offer potential for an unforgettable trip for all holidaymakers who like to rent campervans. And that even at times when it may not be possible to rent a hotel room.

Campervan holidays in London: the megacity on the Thames

London is the capital of the United Kingdom and also the third largest city in Europe with almost nine million inhabitants. The megacity is not only an important financial centre, but with its countless, partly world-famous sights and its great internationality, it is also a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.

Even holidaymakers who do not want to rent a hotel room or a holiday flat, but prefer to travel independently with a campervan, motorhome or camper, need not shy away from Greater London.

You won't find impressive mountains like those in the north of England or in the Scottish Highlands in the south-east of the island. The capital's surroundings are characterised by flat to hilly terrain. So it's wonderfully suited for a few relaxing days with a campervan. It's perfect that campervan hire is also easy in England. Because: In London, it's not only the rents for real estate that are high. Renting a hotel room is rarely cheap either. Renting a campervan in London is therefore the ideal alternative to a conventional city break and also allows for unimagined flexibility when planning your trip.

Only fog and rain? Not at all!

England is notorious for its supposedly bad weather. But on most days of the year, London has far more to offer than the dark, rainy and foggy atmosphere of a thriller about the wife-killer Jack the Ripper or the film adaptation of a novel by Edgar Wallace. The mild London climate is quite comparable to the climatic conditions of many German cities.

Compared to the extreme north of the British Isles, the south around London is rather mild. On the south coast of England, less than 100 kilometres away, there are many famous seaside resorts which, not least because of their mild climate, became popular holiday destinations in the summer months, first for Britons, but later also for international visitors.

Holidaymakers experience the most hours of sunshine between April and August. Rain is not uncommon throughout the year, although larger amounts of precipitation can be expected in the winter months. So the weather shouldn't stop anyone from exploring the region in a rented campervan! So renting a campervan in London is a good idea. So why not rent a campervan or book a motorhome for your next holiday?

"Out and about" - Campervan Road Trip in London

London alone is always worth seeing. If you are visiting the British capital for the first time, you will probably want to see the city's famous sights up close: These certainly include Tower Bridge, named after the nearby historic fortress, which also served as a prison and execution site in its long history. Also worth seeing are St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, the Palace of Westminster with its clock tower, which is often just called "Big Ben" like its famous bell. Afterwards, you can relax with a walk through Hyde Park, the green lung of the city. But the many other parks are also worth seeing. Or you can find a nice bench and sit in the sun by the Thames.

Shopping enthusiasts will be delighted with the wide range of shops on the main shopping street, Oxford Street. More exclusive wishes are fulfilled in the luxury department stores' Harrods. On Saturdays in particular, a visit to Portobello Road Market in the world-famous district of Notting Hill is a must. While on weekdays it's mainly food that's on offer, on Saturdays the market surprises with a wide range of antiques and souvenirs. When hunger strikes, it's worth taking a detour to Camden Market, a collection of small stalls offering international specialities.

For the evening programme, you can choose a musical from various theatres in the West End. Beforehand, an authentic Asian menu can be enjoyed in one of the many small restaurants in nearby Chinatown. If the weather is bad, there are plenty of indoor activities to choose from. Learn more about the city's dark history in the "London Dungeon" or visit some of the numerous museums, some of which are among the largest of their kind. Three examples:

  • Natural History Museum: the natural history museum in the South Kensington district displays, among other things, enormous dinosaur skeletons.
  • British Museum: here you can marvel at world-famous archaeological finds.
  • Tate Gallery of Modern Art: the museum for contemporary art is housed in a former power station.
Get out of the city!

As interesting and varied as the city is: if you have the opportunity, you should definitely explore the surrounding countryside with your camper! Renting a campervan makes this an authentic experience.

For series junkies, for example, a visit to "Highclere Castle", which served as the setting for the TV series "Downton Abbey", is worthwhile. Although the story is set in Yorkshire, the castle, which is located about 100 kilometres west of London in the county of Hampshire, was the backdrop.

Those interested in history as well as technology fans will get their money's worth at "Bletchley Park". German encryption was broken at this country estate in a top-secret military project during the Second World War. Today it is home to the National Computer Museum. The site is located northwest of London.

Why not spend a few days in Oxford with your campervan? The university city, also located on the Thames northwest of the capital, combines academic flair and idyllic English city life. Numerous beautiful parks and gardens invite you to linger. Typical of the region are the barges, which are moved across the Thames by means of piles. The skipper pushes himself along the bottom of the river with a long pole.

Those who have decided to rent a campervan or motorhome can also wonderfully explore the seaside resorts on the south coast. These include Brighton, Worthing, Eastborune and Hastings. Even closer to London is Southend-on-Sea, right on the Thames Estuary in the county of Essex. The seaside resorts are famous for their piers, over which pedestrians can walk far into the sea without getting wet. Some of them also house restaurants or - as in Brighton, for example - entire theme parks. Southend Pier, the more than two-kilometre-long pier in Southend-on-Sea, on the other hand, is the longest pier in the world.

Green hills: there's also beautiful nature to be explored

But the region offers more than cities. Several AONBs, or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are located near London:

  • Chiltern Hills
  • Surrey Hills
  • High Weald
  • Kent Downs

These nature reserves are the perfect destinations to keep the nature lovers and walking enthusiasts in your travel group happy. Or simply to unwind after a few days in the hustle and bustle of the city. Several long-distance hiking trails also allow for extended trekking tours.

How to get to London: by land, sea or air

Travel by train, plane or your own car, then rent a campervan in London and explore the area by camper. That's how you could do it.

As an island nation, Great Britain was for a long time only accessible by sea. Even today, several ferry connections link the kingdom with mainland Europe. The fastest crossing is offered by the ferries between Calais in France and the English port city of Dover, famous for its impressive chalk cliffs. The crossing across the English Channel takes about one hour and thirty minutes.

Since 1994, travellers have also had the option of choosing the rail connection through the Eurotunnel. The Channel Tunnel, which is about 50 kilometres long, also connects the north of France with Calais and allows a through train connection from France, Belgium or the Netherlands directly into the heart of the British capital. This means it can also be reached with just a few changes from German stations. Important stations in the British capital are as follows:

  • Paddington
  • Euston
  • St Pancras
  • King's Cross
  • Victoria
  • Waterloo
  • London Bridge
  • Liverpool Street

Eurostar trains from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam stop at St Pancras station, right in the city centre. Depending on where the rented campervan can be picked up, the onward journey may be via one of the other stations or simply by underground, the "London Underground".

London can also be easily reached by air via five international airports:

  • Heathrow Airport
  • London Gatwick Airport
  • London City Airport
  • London Luton Airport
  • London Stansted Airport

The largest of the airports is Heathrow Airport. However, planes of low-cost carriers mostly fly to Stansted Airport, which is located to the north-east of London. Trains run from London Stansted to central London at short intervals. The Stansted Express trains terminate at Liverpool Street Station, which - like the other stations - is directly connected to the Underground network.

With a campervan in London

Chargeable campsites with the usual facilities can be found both in the London city area and in the surrounding area. Holidaymakers wishing to hire a campervan should find out about pitches before they leave and may wish to make reservations. This way, overcrowded sites can be avoided from the outset.

Holidaymakers who want to explore the city centre with a vehicle (as well as a campervan) will have to pay additional costs: Drivers in central London are charged a congestion charge. Due to the tense traffic situation, it is generally not advisable to drive into the centre of London with a rented camper van. Campervan sites on the outskirts of the city are more suitable. For day trips to the city centre, public transport can be used. Travellers who still want to drive into the city centre with their campervan should inform themselves in advance about the applicable conditions and prices as well as the emission standard of the rented vehicle.

Furthermore, holidaymakers renting a campervan should be aware that left-hand traffic is the rule in Great Britain. In addition, the roads, especially in rural areas, are often much narrower than in Germany and are often lined with impenetrable hedges or even stone walls right next to the edge of the road. For experienced drivers, this is not an insurmountable obstacle, even with a larger vehicle such as a campervan or a caravan, but caution is generally advised. Here, it is definitely better to be safe than sorry.

Campervan hire in London - the bottom line

London is easy to reach by various means of transport and offers a varied holiday program for campers young and old. Whether with a motorhome or campervan: camping enthusiasts will get their money's worth in the region.
