Important information and facts about Stockholm

Rent a camper van on holiday in Stockholm: With Campstar over hill and dale

Thousands of offshore islands, dramatic green landscapes and clear lakes in the interior of the country attract many camping enthusiasts to Sweden. Stockholm welcomes guests with a total of 14 islands in the Baltic Sea.

Would you like to rent a Campervan in Stockholm? There are two campsites within the lively capital where only Campervans are welcome: Langholmens Hisbilscamping, located right on the southern approach to the Västerbron bridge, and Tantolundens Hisbilscamping with 13 pitches, which calls the Södermalm district home.

Situated in beautiful natural surroundings, yet not far from the attractions, the pitches offer an unforgettable place to switch off and live for a while. By the way, they are reserved for drivers of Campervans: Neither caravans nor tents are allowed when renting a site in Stockholm.

Langholmens Husbilscamping

The Palsundskanalen canal babbles not far from the campsite, which opens its doors from May to mid-September. Langholmens Husbilscamping is half an hour from the Djurgadsfärjan pier. This takes travellers to the famous Vasa Museum, the Skansen open-air museum, the Vasa Museum or the extensive Gröna Lund amusement park. Those who want to cool off and splash around can do so on the shores of Malären. Söder Malärstrand is within walking distance of the beach.

Tantolundens Husbilscamping

Tantolundens Hisbilscamping welcomes you in the south-west of Södermalm, a district of Stockholm. It is only about 600 metres to Zinkensdamm metro station. Guests will also find the old town of Gamla Stan within walking distance. The campsite is open all year round. You can book by phone. After receiving the code, you enter the campsite through a barrier.

Climate in Sweden: Trips by Campervan from Stockholm

There is no uniform climate in Sweden that applies nationwide. In the south, you can expect a moderate climate with mild summers and cool winters. Lapland, the north of Sweden, has a polar climate with extremely low temperatures down to -40 degrees Celsius. Unique activities can be enjoyed in these snow masses, which is why Sweden is also worth a trip in winter. In Abisko National Park, around 200km north of the Arctic Circle, you will discover hiking trails that are still covered in snow even at the beginning of June.

Do you prefer action? Take your family on an exciting sleigh ride with trained huskies pulling you through the snowy winter landscape of Lapland. At this time of year, from around September to March, one of the greatest natural phenomena on earth also appears in the skies above Sweden. The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, shine in winter when the sun no longer rises. In addition, the ski season is in full swing at that time.

In the summer months, you can observe another phenomenon: the midnight sun means that the sun almost never sets. So you see, the best time to travel depends on what you want to do.

The best time to travel in a Campervan is between May and October. Camping enthusiasts can expect pleasant temperatures in Stockholm at this time, as well as many hours of sunshine, especially in the summer months. There is little rainfall in May. Furthermore, spring begins in May, bathing the whole country in postcard-worthy hues and tones.

Stockholm: Our suggested itinerary and must-see destinations in and around Sweden's capital city

Guests can fly to Stockholm and start their trip with a Campervan from Stockholm. To discover northern Europe in all its diversity, we recommend a leisurely journey by camper. Extensive forests, spectacular archipelagos and idyllic lakes await you in Scandinavian nature. Whether it's the Aurora Borealis in Lapland, SUP on the lake in the south of the country or watching reindeer not far from the Arctic Circle: Sweden convinces with its diverse destinations at any time of the year.

The following route leads through classic Sweden and stretches through important metropolises, past characteristic landscapes and lakes to charming villages and back to the starting point in Stockholm. The pick-up of the camper also takes place in Stockholm, leads to Lake Mälaren and on to Västeras, the capital of the province of Värmland in southern Sweden. Our excursion tip is to the picturesque Tidö Castle, one of the best preserved castles in the country.

Then it's on to the day's destination Falun in Dalarna, the silver mines of Sala. In Falun you can visit the heart of Sweden, Lake Siljan. Guests can visit historical sights and quaint restaurants in small towns such as Tällberg or Rättvik.

Continue in your Campervan through the vast forest and lake landscapes of Värmland before stopping at Karlstad on the northern shore of Lake Vänern. Take a break at the lake district of Dalsland and drive through Bengtsfors to reach Vänersborg.

At your next destination, Bohuslän, you will experience archipelagos with your own eyes. The rugged, flat rocky islands of Orust and Tjörn, so-called archipelagos, are off the coast and invite you to relax with beaches. Later, the journey continues to Gothenburg, the country's second largest metropolis. The lively centre attracts visitors with long shopping streets, green parks, exciting museums and canals that run through the city like veins.

Afterwards, how about a walk along the shore of Sweden's second largest inland lake? At the southern tip of Lake Vättern, reached via Boras, visit the historic town centre of Jönköping. As an alternative programme, guests take a short trip to the village of Halo. It is home to a wooden church clad in red shingles - one of the most peculiar sacred buildings in the country.

Stops such as Linköping or the confectionery town of Gränna are possible on the way to the day's destination Nyköping. On the onward journey towards Stockholm, where you can rent a Campervan, take a stroll in the pretty harbour town of Trosa on the windy, rugged east coast and let your eyes roam over the wild sea - this is what freedom feels like. Families with children in a camper van look forward to the animal park in Kolmarden.

Situated on several islands between the Baltic Sea and Lake Malär, connected by over 50 bridges, the fascinating city of Stockholm is waiting to be discovered. Here you can enjoy boat trips to the surrounding archipelago, interesting museums and streets worth seeing for shopping lovers touring Stockholm in a Campervan.

Campervan hire in Stockholm: starting point capital

Narrow, cobbled streets and ochre-coloured buildings characterise the heart of the city. In the midst of them you will find the imposing Royal Palace as well as the historically charming St. Nicholas Church, which was built in the 13th century. In addition, the museum island Djurgarden should definitely be on the programme of those interested in culture.

Camper fans can see numerous exhibits related to the Nobel Prize in the Nobel Museum. If you want to go on an excursion to nearby islands, hop on a ferry or an excursion boat that leaves regularly. The so-called Stockholm Archipelago can be reached in no time at all. It is home to about 30,000 small and large islands that lie in the sea between the Baltic Sea and Stockholm. Some of them are particularly worth seeing:

Gamla Stan

The medieval old town Gamla Stan of Stockholm forms the historical centre. Surrounded by water and criss-crossed by winding alleys, it invites you to stroll around with its pastel-coloured houses and magnificent churches and palaces.

Djurgarden

Pure nature and many important attractions of Stockholm are offered by the island and district Djurgarden in the centre of the city. If you rent a Campervan from Stockholm, you can park close to the city centre. In addition to the Gröna Lund amusement park and the Vasa Museum, the Skansen open-air museum is also located here.

Riddarholmen

The small island in the Mälaren - together with the district Gamla Stan - functions as the historical centre of Stockholm. The most famous landmark of the Swedish capital, the Riddarholskyrkan, can be admired as well as several magnificent aristocratic palaces from the 17th century.

Lapland

When you rent a camper in Lapland, you can look forward to a winter wonderland made flesh: let yourself be mesmerised by the Aurora Borealis or pulled through the snow by huskies, eat your fill of delicious Arctic cuisine and see wild Sweden with your own eyes. The land of the midnight sun and the northern lights truly takes you on a journey into the wilderness.

As an Arctic region, it covers about a quarter of Sweden's surface area and enchants with silent forests, mysterious swamps, babbling rivers and mountains. Outdoor enthusiasts are guaranteed not to get bored: from dog sledding and skiing to hiking and fishing, it's all here.

Visit Värmland while renting a Campervan

If you rent a Campervan, outdoor sports enthusiasts and nature lovers should not miss the province of Värmland. It's easy to park your Campervan on the shores of the lake. Whether in a canoe or on a SUP with a paddle in hand, the waters are wonderful to explore.

The capital Karlstad rests idyllically on Lake Vänern and boasts museums and many parks. Historic manor houses, which nowadays serve as noble guesthouses for guests to rent, dot the barren landscape. The Hennickehammars Herrgard and Dömle Herrgard estates from 1446, for example, add a touch of elegance to the streets.

Popular activities in Värmland with a Campervan include raft trips on the Karälven. Keep an eye out for moose and beavers. And who knows, you might even spot one of the rare white moose that have only been sighted in this region.

Campervan rental in Stockholm: Rent and start your trip to the islands of Orust and Tjörn

Water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers take note: The archipelago off the west coast of Sweden is about an hour's drive north of Gothenburg and enjoys great popularity due to its constant tangibility of the sea. Not only locals but also camping enthusiasts appreciate the charm of Orust and Tjörn. With their peaceful bathing bays, flat beaches and quiet fishing villages, they are ideal for taking a break from the stressful (travel) everyday life.

Metropolis Gothenburg - Campervan hire in Stockholm

If you rent a Campervan in Stockholm, why not drive to Gothenburg? On the river Göta älv on the western coast of the country, the city is famous for its wide, green avenues, such as Kungsportsavenyn. This is the city's largest shopping street, with many cafés and shops. Families spend the afternoon at Liseberg amusement park, enjoying rides, a sculpture garden and performances.

Campervan hire in Stockholm: facts and figures

When you rent a Campervan in Stockholm, there are a few things that will interest you: In Sweden, distances are often given in Swedish miles. One Swedish mile (mil) is about 10km. Furthermore, there is a permissible alcohol limit of 0.2 per mille - this can be reached after just one beer.

Also good to know for anyone renting a Campervan: Almost nothing works on site without a credit card. Alongside the rather unpopular cash, it is the main means of payment in Sweden. A credit card is often required, for example at one of the many modern Campervan sites that operate without staff. Make sure that your card is activated for Scandinavia.

The best news comes at the end, as usual: There are no tolls throughout the country. Even the Södra-Länken tunnel, which you may come across on your trip with the Campervan in Stockholm, can be used free of charge, as can all roads. But beware: the Öresund Bridge and the bridges in Sundsvall and Motala, for example, are subject to tolls when travelling by Campervan.

Campervan travellers in Stockholm beware: Everyman's right is enshrined in law and allows every visitor and resident to camp completely freely. When wild camping, simply set up camp in the middle of nature, for example by a wide meadow or an idyllic lake. Free camping is not permitted in cultivated fields and car parks.

Thanks to the Everyman's Right, all travellers to Sweden who rent a caravan can save themselves the usually expensive fees for campsites, provided they are self-sufficient. However, anyone travelling to Stockholm in a camper van must bear the following in mind: In order not to damage nature, vehicles may only stay overnight outside of advertised camps at a rest area or on the side of the road. This applies for a maximum of 24 hours.

Deep forests, vast landscapes and picturesque lakes: Sweden is the optimal destination for people planning to travel to Stockholm with their four-legged friend. It is mandatory that the pet is registered at customs and vaccinated against rabies. At least 21 days must have passed between the rabies vaccination and entry into Stockholm.
