Bad Waldsee in Baden-Württemberg is a beautiful destination for a relaxing trip with a campervan. The town is a well-known mud spa and a recognised Kneipp spa. Wellness is very important here.
In addition to the treatments, Bad Waldsee also has a historic old town and a beautiful pedestrian zone. Bad Waldsee belongs to the Bodesee-Oberschwaben region, so a trip to Lake Constance is part of the program.
The village lies at an altitude of 584 to 754 metres in the Altdorfer Wald and is located directly between two lakes, the Stadtsee and the Schlosssee. Both lakes are fed by small streams and there is a spring in the northwest. The spring water flows into the Danube.
The larger Stadtsee is located directly in the city and is used by the residents as an outdoor swimming pool in summer. In addition, the municipal rowing club trains there. There are small rowing boats for hire at the jetty.
The lake is estimated to be 16,000 years old and is said to have originated in the Ice Age. Today it is under municipal supervision and well maintained. Unfortunately, the castle lake is not accessible to visitors, as there is hardly any public access. At the moment, the lake still belongs to the estate of a princely house.
Bad Waldsee has a temperate climate with a warm summer and a mild winter. The town lies at an altitude of about 600 metres. Therefore, it is often a few degrees cooler here than in the lowlands.
On average, Bad Waldsee has an average temperature of 8.6 Celsius. The best time to visit begins in May, when there is no more frost at night, and ends in September.
The warmest month of the year is July. Temperatures of 18 degrees are reached on average now. On many days, however, it is warmer, so swimming in the lake is no problem. Before May it often gets quite cool, especially at night you can still expect frost in April. This is not ideal for a relaxed holiday with a campervan. The months between November and January are also not recommended for a camping holiday. In January, temperatures often reach only -1 degree.
It rains quite often in Bad Waldsee compared to other German towns. The annual rainfall is no less than 1050 mm. There is less precipitation in winter than in summer. So for a holiday with a campervan it makes sense to have rainproof clothing and equipment in your luggage.
The convent of the Franciscan nuns belongs to the diocese of Rottenberg-Stuttgard. From 1404, Elisabeth Achler and a small group of women lived there according to the rules of St. Francis. After her death in 1420, she was beatified and is still venerated by many today.
In 1848, some women decided to go to this place to serve the people. The nuns who live in the convent today work, among other things, in caring for the elderly and the sick, but many also go abroad for a longer stay to help. Herbal seminars are also offered in the convent.
The Stadtsee is the most popular destination in town for locals and tourists alike. As it is right in the centre, it is an integral part of everyday life. Walks along the shore are a fixed ritual for many people.
In summer, the lake is also an inviting place for swimming and boating. There are small cafés and restaurants along the promenade.
The Erwin Hymer Museum is dedicated to the history of mobile travel. For this reason, it is particularly suitable for campervan fans. It is relatively new and was only opened at the end of 2011.
It is easy to reach by campervan as it is located directly on the B 30 and has a large car park. The museum contains a permanent and a temporary exhibition. Altogether, old cars, campervans and caravans are shown on 7000 m². The hall is 19 metres high and 60 metres long.
The museum also includes a restaurant and conference rooms. The construction cost a total of 19 million euros. Among the exhibits are replicas from the 1930s.
Around Bad Waldsee there are some very good campsites with good campervan pitches. Here are the three best sites in the area:
This campervan site is very relaxed and is located right next to the apple orchard. The landlords are very helpful and friendly. All the pitches are big enough for and have plenty of access points for electricity.
There are wonderful walks on the adjacent paths and the museum is also nearby. All in all, a good site.
This quiet campsite is located between Biderbach and Bad Buchau. Often only the church bells can be heard on the site. The owner is very friendly and helpful.
If you are looking for a nice and pretty campsite, you will find it here. The pitches for the camper van are large enough and the sanitary facilities are clean. The area is particularly suitable for hiking.
This site is located directly on the spa grounds and close to the town. The lake and the castle park are within easy reach. There are two pitches for extra large campervans.
The washrooms are tidy and in good condition. By bike, you can also quickly get to the city centre with its many shops and restaurants. There are three bike shops in town, but you can't rent bikes at any of them. It is therefore best to bring your own.
By train to Bad Waldsee: The town is easy to reach by train, it lies directly on the Ulm - Friedrichshafen railway line. A further cross connection runs between Munich and Freiburg.
