Freiburg, the university city in Breisgau, is wonderful to explore with a campervan or motorhome. It is located in the Black Forest in the southwest of Germany. Thanks to the mild climate and the beautiful old town, guests always enjoy coming here to spend a few pleasant days.
The city's landmark is the 116 m high tower of Freiburg Cathedral. The Gothic tower towers over the entire old town. The Schlosseberg, a local recreation area with many hiking opportunities, can be easily reached from Freiburg by train.
Geographically, Freiburg is located in Baden-Württemberg. The Upper Rhine Graben, the bay and the Black Forest characterise the landscape. Nice excursion destinations with the campervan are the city of Mulhouse in Alsace as well as Basel, Strasbourg and Zurich. All these large cities are within a radius of about 50 km.
It is only 42 km to the Swiss border. The town itself is already situated in the foothills and has a difference in altitude of 1000 m. The highest point is Schauinsland with an altitude of 1284 metres. The 48th parallel north runs through the middle of the city.
The point is marked on Habsburg Street and made clear by different coloured stones. Beautiful hiking areas are in the Zarten basin at Bergen Roßkopf and Brombergkopf. Günterstal is also very pretty and is already in the Black Forest.
The best time to travel by campervan is June, July and August. During these months the thermometer shows an average of 25 degrees Celsius. These values are record-breaking for Germany and, in fact, Freiburg is one of the warmest cities in the whole country with an average temperature of 11.4 degrees.
The campervan season usually begins in May, when the thermometer rarely drops below 8 degrees Celsius at night. During the day it is already a pleasant 20 degrees. The time for swimming in the lakes begins in June and lasts until September.
In September it can still be 22 degrees. The season ends in November, when temperatures drop abruptly to 10 degrees. It is always warmer on the plains than on the mountains. In 2003, a record temperature of 42 degrees Celsius was measured on the plain.
Precipitation in Freiburg is evenly distributed over the months. The driest months are July and August. In summer it rains an average of 12 days, in winter it is 17 to 18 days. It is therefore well worth packing a rain jacket or rainproof camping equipment for a holiday with a campervan.
There are a number of interesting buildings and natural attractions in and around Freiburg. It is difficult to choose. However, no visitor should miss the following sights:
One of the highlights of the city is the Freiburg Minster in the old town. Due to its long construction period from 1200 to 1513, this cathedral combines three styles. The church was begun in the Romanesque style. Later it was built in the Gothic and late Gothic styles.
Since 1817, Freiburg has been the seat of a bishop, so the cathedral is actually a cathedral. The tower is one of the most beautiful towers of Christian architecture. Undisputedly, Freiburg Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece.
With a height of 1283 metres, the city's local mountain offers a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding countryside. For this reason, it is the most popular destination in the region. There used to be a silver works here, which is why you can find silver if you are lucky.
Visitors can walk up the mountain if they wish or take the cable car. There are many great views of the Black Forest from the footpath. Booking a one-way ride is of course also possible.
This huge holiday park attracts millions of visitors year after year, making it one of the most popular parks in Europe, only Disney Land in Paris has more guests. Due to its size, it is impossible to fully explore the park in a single day.
In total, more than 100 rides are operated on 950,000 m², plus six hotels, a tepee village and a conference centre. The Europa Park even has its own campsite where you can park your campervan.
There are several campsites in Freiburg. These are the three most beautiful:
This park offers a good base for visiting the city and exploring the surrounding area. The staff is very friendly and happy to help with any problems. The sanitary facilities are clean and modern.
The parking area for the camper van is large enough, only the paths could be a bit wider. The small café offers cakes and snacks. The lake at the entrance is particularly pretty.
The site as well as the lake and the sports facilities are top, plus very fair prices. The staff are always willing to listen. The site is also suitable for a larger campervan.
Lake Tunis invites you to swim in summer, there is even an extra jetty. The water ski facility is another bonus. If you like, you can also rent a boat and row across the water.
Camping Hirzberg is a very good and quiet site close to the city. The welcome is very friendly and the sanitary facilities are in good condition. The pitches are mostly on a grassy area for the campervan, but there are also asphalt pitches.
The site has a sustainable concept with green electricity and organic food. The old town is easy to reach by bike.
Tip: Rent a bike: Bikes can be rented in town at the bike station right by the train station.
The city is easy to reach by campervan, the transport network is well developed. However, the A 830 motorway is still in the planning stage.
The city itself does not have its own airport, but there are a few international airports in the area. Basel airport would be a good choice.
Due to the beautiful campsites and the old town worth seeing, Freiburg is an ideal destination for a holiday with a campervan. A hike up the local mountain is rewarded with a great panorama. The small bathing lakes in the area invite you to swim in summer.
