Melbourne is a bustling creative hub and is the capital of Victoria. Ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world multiple times, it’s no wonder why so many people come to experience this vibrant city. Melbourne is home to a plethora of iconic attractions and curious experiences. Here are some highlights you should use as a guide when venturing through the city:
1. Flinders Street station – A 5 minute walk to Federation Square
Flinders Street Station is one of the most notable landmarks in Melbourne. It was notable for being the busiest train station in the world during World War 2 due to it’s central location within Melbourne’s CBD (Central Business District). Today it still operates daily as a train station but has become an iconic visual representation of Melbourne. Come here to marvel at its architecture, admire the clock tower, take photos in front of the large ‘MELBOURNE’ sign or enjoy free events held at Federation Square which is just a short walk away from Flinders Street Station.
2. Southbank – A 15 minute walk from Flinders Street Station
Southbank is home to multiple events and festivals throughout the year, with live entertainment and food stalls galore! It is located on the south bank of Yarra River and houses many restaurants for any taste. You can also find high-end shopping at Crown Casino or DFO (Direct Factory Outlets) if you’re after designer brands for less! If you want to see Melbourne from high above, then visit Eureka Skydeck 88 to get an unrivalled view over Melbourne from almost 300m above ground level. The 3 glass cubes protruding out over the edge are not for those who are scared of heights! Southbank also offers free walking tours which will give you a great overview of what to expect when staying in Melbourne!
3. Queen Victoria Markets – A 20 minute walk from Flinders Street Station or a 10 minute tram ride from Southern Cross Railway Station (Tram #57)
Queen Victoria Markets have been around since 1878 and still operate today offering fresh produce, handcrafted goods, souvenirs, food stalls and more! You can pick up fresh fruit & veg here as well as cheap clothes, leather goods and souvenirs! They operate every Wednesday night 5pm-10pm with live music and entertainment along with heaps more food stalls than what operate on regular days! On weekends they operate 7am-4pm Saturday 6am-4pm Sunday respectively so make sure you get there early on Monday if you want to purchase produce because many items will be sold out by lunch time! If you love trying new foods then don’t miss this experience when visiting Melbourne! They sell everything from dim sims (traditional Australian dumplings), meat pies (a local favourite!), fresh seafood straight from Port Phillip Bay or try an Afro fusion coffee that will have your taste buds tingling with delight!
You will definitely be full after your trip here but it will be worth every bite!!! Check out their website for more details about trading days/times. The markets also offer free walking tours daily except Tuesdays at 10:30am & 1:30pm which takes about 90 minutes where you learn about what items are sold on each day, how long they have traded for etc.. I recommend registering online beforehand via their website if possible however they do take walk-ins but spaces are limited so best book ahead via their website.
4. Fitzroy Gardens & Captain Cook Cottage – A 20 minute walk from Flinders Street Station or a 10 minute tram ride (Tram #11)
Fitzroy Gardens was originally used as grazing grounds by settlers wanting land close to town however it soon transformed into what we know today after numerous trees were planted & Captain Cook Cottage was constructed in 1934 & opened for public viewing near Fitzroy Gardens’ east gate entrance near Cook street & Wellington parade junction.. Fitzpatrick gardens is home to many animals including ducks & geese that wander freely among visitors allowing children and adults alike to feed them seed pellets purchased upon entry into Fitzroy gardens east gate ticket office ($1 per cup). There are also signs placed alongside certain areas warning not to approach certain birds including peacocks who sometimes attack small children.. but don’t worry they never killed anyone!!! 🙂 If your feeling hungry there is a café located inside Captain Cook Cottage which serves several tempting snacks including light meals & drinks.. otherwise there are plenty more options nearby including cafes along Spring street..
