Campervans in Duisburg

Campervan hire Duisburg: Discover Duisburg with campstar

The diverse city of Duisburg is wonderful to discover with a campervan.

There really is a lot to see and explore in and around this city of culture. The inner harbour and the numerous industrial buildings are particularly charming.

Here, modern new buildings stand right next to old warehouses. The harbour invites you to stroll and cycle, and there are numerous cafés and bistros right on the waterfront for well-deserved breaks.

Afternoons can be spent in one of the numerous museums in the old harbour warehouses or on the canal. The marina is also an attraction, located directly below the "Five Boats", an ultra-modern office building.

The harbour can be reached on foot from the city centre. Fifty years ago, it experienced its economic decline after the flour mills in Germany were replaced by factories. Then, in the mid-1990s, the harbour was converted into a local recreation area with attractive footpaths and cycle paths.

Duisburg still has one of the largest steel production facilities in Europe. Nevertheless, many of the old facilities have now been shut down, and some have been converted into leisure centres, sports facilities or industrial monuments.

Campervan hire in Duisburg - The best time to travel

The best time to travel by campervan is from May to September. During these months, temperatures do not drop below 10 degrees Celsius at night and it is nice and warm during the day. This is the ideal time to explore Duisburg and the surrounding area in a campervan.

Holidays in Duisburg - Temperatures

Between June and August, temperatures in the city range from 24 to 26 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for swimming. The season begins in May, when the thermometer reaches a pleasant 20 degrees, and ends in September, when the leaves fall from the trees. In the winter months of November to January it is too cold for a holiday with a motorhome; snow and frost are to be expected during this time.

Holidays in Duisburg - Precipitation

In Duisburg it rains quite regularly throughout the year. The most precipitation falls in August with 75 mm. The driest month is April with only 34 mm of precipitation. For a holiday with a campervan, you should therefore pack a rain jacket or umbrella even in summer.

Campervan hire in Duisburg - The most beautiful sights

You should plan a week for the city if you want to visit all the sights in Duisburg and at the same time plan one or two days of relaxation. However, you should not miss these attractions even on a shorter stay with a campervan:

Holiday in Duisburg Destination 1: Duisburg Inner Harbour

With a size of 89 ha, the inner harbour is a great day trip destination. For over 100 years this port was an important transshipment point for grain. After the grain trade lost importance in the mid-1960s, the site lay derelict for over 20 years until the city had the old warehouses converted into restaurants and museums.

The British architect Norman Foster was commissioned to redesign the inner harbour to provide space for culture, leisure, work and living. So all these four components can be found along the waterfront. In addition, the harbour is now considered an important industrial monument and is part of the Route for Industrial Culture in the Ruhr.

Holiday in Duisburg Destination 2: Five Boats

You are almost bound to come across this office building on a tour of the harbour. It

is located directly on the humpback bridge. The modern, seven-story building by the English designer Sir Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners was completed in 2004 and is a real eye-catcher with its ultra-modern architecture.

The five boats house many individual offices, almost all of which have a view of the water and are almost identically cut. The building cost a total of 50 million euros. In the basement there are many shops and restaurants.

The building is particularly impressive in the evening when it is illuminated. The LED lamps change colour and are distributed over 660 m². The lamps can be freely programmed and therefore light up differently every now and then.

Campervan hire in Duisburg Destination 3: Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park

Another Duisburg attraction is the large landscape park. It was created on the occasion of a building exhibition and is now part of the Route for Industrial Culture. According to the British magazine The Guardian, this park is one of the ten best city parks in the whole world.

Everyone has to decide this for themselves, but the park is definitely worth a visit. If you like a mix of old pipes and nature, you will certainly be thrilled. Numerous concerts and events also take place here in summer.

Renting bikes Tip: In Duisburg you can rent bikes at several places. The Revier-Rad-Station and "Metropolraduhr" are particularly well known. Both providers rent out good city bikes.

Renting a camper van in Duisburg - The best campsites

It's worth going a bit further afield in Duisburg to book a nice campsite. The campervan sites near Duisburg are not very well maintained and are suitable for one night at most.

Campervan rental - Rheincamping Meerbusch Breitbach & Brix GbR

This site is ideal for a peaceful holiday directly on the Rhine. Some of the campervan pitches are right on the bank. The campsite operators are very friendly and helpful.

The sanitary facilities are clean and tidy. There is a small mini shop at the reception and fresh bread rolls in the morning. The site is well suited for children as it has a nice playground.

Campervan rental - Campingpark Groß-Reken Schomberg

This site is ideal for a holiday with a camper van. The campervan can be parked safely and quietly on one of the numerous pitches within the site. The park itself is lovingly maintained and beautifully planted.

In addition to pitches for tourists, many pitches are also permanently rented out and therefore prepared. The sanitary facilities are clean and in order. However, you have to drive a bit for a trip into town.

Campervan rental - Niederrhein campervan site

The site is well located and ideal for a campervan. The restaurant offers delicious food and is very popular with visitors. Unfortunately, hygiene is often neglected.

With the camping card you have access to the washrooms, but you have to pay a fee every time. If location is more important to you than ambience, you can park your camper van here for one or two nights. For a longer stay, the other campsites are more recommendable.

Renting a campervan - Getting there

By plane: Düsseldorf Airport and Essen/Mühlheim Airport are the nearest airports. You then have to travel on to the city itself by bus or train.

Renting a campervan / Getting here by car/ campervan: Getting here by car or campervan is no problem. The transport network in the Ruhr area is well developed. The A51 motorway runs directly past the city.

Duisburg campervan hire - Conclusion

Duisburg has a varied program to offer visitors. The numerous industrial monuments are particularly worth seeing and make a holiday an unforgettable experience. To find a nice campsite, it is worth taking a short drive; the campervan sites in the city are only suitable for one night.
